In April 2007, Habiart Foundation presented Vidyottama at Kamani Auditorium, New Delhi. Written and directed by renowned theatre practitioner Mohan Maharishi and produced by Udbhav Arts, the performance captivated audiences with its thought-provoking reinterpretation of one of India's most celebrated literary legends.
Based on the life of Kalidasa, Vidyottama offered a contemporary reassessment of history through a nuanced gender perspective. Rather than portraying Vidyottama merely as the inspiration behind Kalidasa's genius, the play presented her as an equal creative force, foregrounding the often-overlooked contribution of women to literature and artistic expression. As the narrative unfolded, the audience became a privileged witness to the creative process itself, ultimately leaving each viewer to reflect on the question of authorship and the true nature of artistic creation.
"For us, the value of a work of art lies both in the modicum of expression as well as in its ability to sensitise the imagination towards hitherto unforeseen innuendoes and subtle implications. Mohanji has very successfully combined the known reality with the possibilities of such innuendo. This is a play that will be remembered for a perfect match of genre and content, and an equally brilliant exposition of the actors' inherent capabilities."
The presentation of Vidyottama reflected Habiart Foundation's commitment to supporting meaningful cultural dialogue and showcasing artistic works that challenge convention while celebrating India's rich literary and theatrical traditions.
